Leo Frank was a pencil factory superintendent who was convicted in 1913 of the rape and murder of 13 year old, Mary Phagan. Mary was one of his child employees at the pencil factory. A guilty verdict was announced on August 25. Frank and his lawyers made a series of unsuccessful appeals. Most Americans opposed Leo Frank and his supporters over what was described as a "virulently racist" characterization of Jim Conley, who Leo Frank, his supporters, and his lawyers tried to blame for Leo Frank's crimes.
